Course Care

AROUND THE COURSE with John Coulsell - Course Superintendent

Winter 2008

Southern Rural Water has informed the club that they must now install two water meters on the Jan Juc creek pumps.  Southern Rural Water will now be taking meter readings to make sure the club doesn't go over its water allocation of 14meg. The licence is for a winter extraction only so we can no longer fill the irrigation dams over the summer months when required after rain.  This would have put the club in a very difficult and costly position if not for the RACV.  The RACV has made this a priority to increase the extraction licence to 70 meg and the course irrigation storage dams to 70meg.  Hopefully the RACV will be successful with their application.  With the increase in fairway watering over the warmer months of the year, members should enjoy the improved playing surface.

Over winter we have focused on bunker renovation by reshaping bunker walls, drainage and replacing sand.  This would be a good opportunity to remind members not to walk up bunker faces and not to rake the walls of the bunkers.  Members should turn the rake over and smooth over their foot marks with the flat side of the rake when leaving the bunker. This will help golf balls to roll into the bunkers and not stay on the wall of the bunker.  l look forward to the next couple of years when we can completely rebuild all the bunkers from the ground up,  to make the bunkers more consistent.

A lot of revegetation work has also been carried out by removing environmental weeds (Boneseed, African Box-thorn, Sweet Pittosporum etc) from environmental sensitive areas.

More surface drainage work has been completed on the 1st fairway to help relieve the problem of puddling after heavy rain.

The past three weeks the staff have been busy preparing the course for club championships.  On behalf of the groundstaff l would like to take this opportunity to wish all members good luck in the coming three weeks.

Damage to Greens

Flagsticks, Bags etc.

Players should ensure that, when putting down bags, or the flagstick, no damage is done to the putting green, and that  they don't damage the hole by standing close to it in handling the flagstick or in removing the ball from the hole. The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green.

Handling the flag

1. Don't drop the flagstick on the putting surface as it will cause damage.
2. Always lower the flagstick by club
3....or by hand.
4. Avoid damage to surrounds by placing the stick in the centre of the cup.

Golf Carts

Golf carts users are required to abide by the Rules governing the Use of Golf Carts.

Damage Through Practice Swings

In taking practice swings players should avoid causing damage to the course, particularly the tees by removing divots.

Green Cutting Procedures

Greens are cut in a predetermined order.
On days on which competitions are programmed, the aim is to cut each green before players on the time sheet are in a position to reach any particular green.
In the event of players in a competition being ready to play a green, the staff are instructed to stand aside and allow the players to proceed.
On other occasions, ie no competition or members playing earlier than times shown on the time sheet, the Greens Staff are instructed to proceed with their programme of work. There are good reasons for this procedure, including the need to complete essential work on the entire course in the time available after allowing for scheduled competitions. On such occasions players must allow work to proceed be it on the fairway, tee, green or practice fairway. Players must not hit if Course Staff or machinery are in range.

Tuesday Gang

They gather at about 8.00am Tuesday mornings and under the guidence of the Course Superintendent they undertake all the small jobs that need doing around the course and clubhouse. Whether it be the removal of dead and fallen trees, tending garden beds, repairing and resurfacing paths, repainting hazard markers or even revetting bunkers, the Tuesday Gang apply themselves to the work with enthusiasim and good humour.

They work from 8.00am to Midday and are always looking for more volunteers. If you think you can spare some time on a Tuesday morning to help out with the 101 things that need doing around the club, then come along and join in.
